Getting help for your mental health from an online psychologist is becoming increasingly popular. Despite criticism, research shows that online therapy is an effective treatment method that is also convenient.

In recent times, it has become increasingly popular to talk to a psychologist online when seeking help for mental illness. More new and existing psychologist clinics are now starting to offer psychological help online.   As a private person, it can feel good to be able to receive therapy without having to leave the comfort of home.

However, some believe that the physical meeting is more effective than talking to a psychologist online. Critics say that an online psychologist can not observe the patient’s body language, tone of voice and how the patient behaves in general – and therefore can not make a complete assessment.

In addition, it is believed that the online meeting will be impersonal; it is not possible to build a close relationship between patient and psychologist as in a physical meeting.

That’s what the research says

Despite concerns, research shows that online therapy can be very effective, and in some respects even better than traditional therapy.

Several research studies give the thumbs up for online psychologists. A German-Swiss study from 2014 stated that internet-based therapy is as effective as a physical meeting with a psychologist. Another study from 2018 stated that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) online is “effective, acceptable and practical”. The researchers write in the research report that online CBT is effective in treating depression, panic disorder, anxiety and social phobia. A Swedish study from 2014 concluded that online therapy is not only effective in treating anxiety disorders, but that it is also cost-effective.

Benefits of online therapy

Simple and convenient.  Since all treatment takes place online, you can be at home. This can be especially beneficial if you live in a more remote area. In addition, it is generally way easier to get an appointment.

Anonymity. You do not have to use your real name, you can be anonymous.

Lowers the threshold. Mental illness is still taboo. Many keep quiet about their psychological problems – and even more avoid seeking help. As it is now possible to get help from the comfort of home and that you can be anonymous, the threshold for seeking help is lowered. The same goes for people who suffer from social phobia who prefer to avoid physical encounters. The online meeting makes it easier for them.

Cheaper. Being treated by an online psychologist is usually cheaper than traditional treatment.

The psychologist can treat more people. Studies have shown that it takes less time for the psychologist to treat a patient online and can thus treat more patients.

The Future of Psychological Counseling is on the Internet

Today we live in a digital age. People are looking for help on the Internet. Those who want to buy something extraordinary do it online, and therapy is no different. As an online therapist, I have developed many different ways to help couples, families and individuals using technology. I am still learning about the possibilities of online therapy and this topic continues to excite me, perhaps the best adventure.
